CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The City has completed its upgrade to bike lanes and pedestrian crossings on Augusta Boulevard in Ukrainian Village and West Town.

The project will help to--among other things, increase safety for people walking, biking, and driving.

Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner Gia Biagi said the city is already seeing the benefits for everyone using the street.

"Our initial data collection is already showing a 35% decrease in people driving over 30 miles per hour and the number of people driving below 20 miles per hour has increased by 29%," she added.

Alderman Daniel La Spata also supported the improvements to Augusta Boulevard.

"Improving infrastructure is the only way to ensure that we can eliminate traffic deaths and reduce crashes, and installing complete street improvements along Augusta provides a much needed connection for bicyclists across the 1st Ward and adjacent neighborhoods," he said in a statement.

In addition to the newly completed work on Augusta, CDOT is implementing several other projects this summer and fall to expand Chicago’s bike network and improve safety for all road users.
