(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of America's best-known Cubs fans and a son of Chicago baseball royalty are apparently closing in on a deal to invest in the Joliet Slammers minor-league baseball team.
Slammers majority owner Nick Semaca confirmed to WBBM Newsradio on Thursday that the team is in discussions with a group led by actor and Chicago native Bill Murray and former White Sox marketing guru and "Disco Demolition" creator Mike Veeck to invest in the team.
Semaca said the deal is still not finalized, but members of the Joliet City Council's Stadium Committee are set to consider a request for a sale of the team at a meeting scheduled for Monday.
He calls it “a fantastic opportunity by almost any measure you could think of.”

Murray, the Oscar-nominated star of movies including "Lost in Translation," "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day," is a frequent sight at Wrigley Field during Cubs' playoffs runs. He’s a part-owner of a number of minor-league teams with Veeck, the son of legendary former White Sox owner Bill Veeck.
The Slammers play in the Frontier League, and have been in operation since replacing the Joliet JackHammers in 2010. They finished fifth in the league last season with a record of 46-50.
