CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In the Chicago mayor’s race, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson has picked up the endorsement of Bishop Larry Trotter, despite the South Side pastor’s previous endorsement of Willie Wilson prior to the city’s February election.
“[Wilson’s been] a friend to this church—and [he] remains a friend,” Trotter said. “It is very important, now as we go to the polls for a runoff, that we put the right person in City Hall.”
From the altar of his Sweet Holy Spirit Church, Trotter praised Johnson for what he called “fresh” plans for the city.
“It’s new, and I just think that this is an hour that we should put the right people—qualified people and people that love God—in office,” Trotter said.
Johnson introduced himself at Sunday service as the son of a pastor.
“There’s a direct correlation between youth employment and violence reduction, Johnson said. “The Bible says, ‘If you cause a young person to stumble, you might as well tie a mallet around your neck and jump in the lake.’”
The Cook County commissioner said he’s running to “finally retire this tale of two cities and usher in one story for one Chicago.”
Trotter’s spokesman said Wilson tried to get him to join in his support of Paul Vallas, who the businessman endorsed last week.
