DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A popular attraction for fans of science and nature in DuPage County should be easier to get to, even after floods.

A wooden bridge under York Road and along Salt Creek carries people from a parking lot to the Graue Mill and Museum in Oak Brook.

Erik Neidy, Director of Natural Resources for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, said when Salt Creek flooded the bridge, it often had to close.

"When get heavy rains, the river comes up and starts to flood," he explained.

"It brings debris down and because it's a wooden structure, trees, debris, things along those lines get get blocked and therefore we have to shut the trail down, bring staff in and then remove that debris so it shuts us down more often than we would prefer."

Neidy said the wooden bridge is being replaced by a walkway made of concrete and asphalt, which requires less maintenance after flooding.

The new bridge is estimated to cost nearly $625,000 and could be completed by late this summer.
