(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg huddled with Illinois Democrats Friday as he stopped in Chicago to push President Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan.
He pointed to the CTA’s 95th Street Red Line station as an example of what can be done if Congress passes the program.
He said the city needs to extend the Red Line so that South Siders don’t have to commute more than an hour each way.
Buttigieg said Biden is prepared to push his Build Back Better bill through Congress on Democratic votes alone, if needed.
Republicans have faulted the president for broadening the scope of infrastructure, which typically has been roads and bridges. They say the White House plan contains too much wasteful spending.
Brian Costin, deputy state director for the group Americans for Prosperity, said the Biden Administration has proposed free electric vehicle charging stations. But that’s just subsidizing rich people who drive expensive Teslas, he told WBBM Newsradio.
Costin also objects to the government paying for expansion of broadband Internet access to underserved areas because that is best left to the private sector.
