CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A dozen worshippers were taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a South Side church Sunday morning.
Shortly after the 11:30 a.m. services started at New Philadelphia Baptist Church, firefighters were called to the one-and-a-half story brick building at Garfield Boulevard and State Street due to the leak.
Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Juan Hernandez said paramedics took 12 people to various hospitals in good or fair condition.
“The gas department was called to investigate the source of the carbon monoxide,” Hernandez said. “They did shut off all appliances.”
He said firefighters measured carbon monoxide levels at 400 parts per million — that’s double the maximum amount deemed healthy by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
