Caregivers are at risk of burnout; can county government help?

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — DuPage County is taking steps to try to reduce the stress on caregivers for the elderly.

The risk is burnout. Caregivers could get so stressed over time, taking care of a loved one, that at some point two people will need care: the original patient and the caregiver.

“I think this is a proactive thing,” said Julie Renehan, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee of the DuPage County Board.

“We realize that the caregiver’s health can start to decline when they’re spending so much time taking care of their loved ones and not themselves.

“And obviously we’re in uncharted waters here with COVID, and our caregivers have more stress than ever.”

Renehan says DuPage County will have a Zoom meeting early next month to help administrators know how to help caregivers of people who are 60 and over.
