CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – It was a big mystery at the time but memories and knowledge of the case are fading. Helen Brach, heiress to the Brach’s Candy fortune, disappeared 45 years ago Thursday.
The 65-year-old Brach was last seen leaving the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her houseman and chauffeur Jack Matlick said he drove her from O’Hare International Airport to her Glenview mansion where Bev Dawson, co-president of the Glenview History Center, said he claims she stayed for four days.
"That was pretty unlike her because she was on the phone with her friends all the time. So right from the get go, it seemed like there was something kind of off about that story,” Dawson said.
Matlick was a suspect in her murder but not charged. Another man served time for racketeering and conspiracy in the case investigators believe involved the mob. Dawson said the house remains but few people seem to realize its connection.

"That story has largely disappeared from local lore," Dawson said.
Brach was declared legally dead in 1984.
Glenview police said the case is open but suspended pending any new leads or information.
