(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A high profile Cook County agency is trying to help transform neighborhoods as its way of observing the Juneteenth Holiday.
The Cook County Land Bank Authority (CCLBA) is holding its third annual giveaway of properties to community organizations. The properties are used to create community space.
Previous success stories include the vacant properties donated to No Matter What NFP in 2023 and the Urban Male Network in 2022.
“It’s inspiring to witness the transformative power of community-driven initiatives,” said CCLBA Executive Director Jessica Caffrey in a released statement.
“No Matter What NFP and the Urban Male Network have turned vacant spaces into community assets, showcasing what is possible when local organizations are empowered with resources. This Juneteenth, we honor the resilience and creativity of those who envision and create a brighter future for their neighborhoods.”
One of this year's recipients is the Sweetwater Foundation.
“If you guys haven't been over here, they have a great farming and, and building and beehive and gardening, and just everything. All of the works over here, and they interact with the community,” Caffrey said to WBBM Newsradio.
Four other organizations will also be awarded land. The list is being finalized and should be announced by the end of the month.
The Land Bank feels putting these properties back into use, lowers crime and uplifts neighborhoods.
