CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two Northwest Side neighborhoods are about to get a whole lot friendlier to bicyclists.

The Chicago Department of Transportation announced it will install a new grid of bike routes on major streets in the Belmont-Cragin and Hermosa neighborhoods on the Northwest Side, in addition to the expansion of Divvy bike-share service.

According to Streets Blog Chicago, the Chicago Department of Transportation and Aldermen Ariel Reboyras, Felix Cardona, and Gilbert Villegas collaborated with other local community leaders to identify good streets for bike routes in the neighborhood.

“These new projects will form a connected bike network to help neighbors easily get to all of the places they want and need to go by bike,” CDOT said. “Providing people with more places to bike will help improve the accessibility, safety, public health, and overall quality of life in Belmont Cragin and Hermosa.”

East-west streets where new bike routes are planned include:
• 3400 North Roscoe Avenue
• 3200 North Belmont Avenue
• 2800 North Diversey Avenue
• 2600 North Wrightwood Avenue
• 2300 to 2000 North Grand and Armitage avenues

North-south streets where new bike routes are planned include:
• 6000 West Austin Avenue
• 5600 West Central Avenue
• 5200 West Laramie
• 4500 West Kilbourn

CDOT said in a handout the bike lane work will begin later this summer.
