The city will start closing some lanes downtown next week as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins work on a new train station.

Starting August 18, crews will be doing utility and structural locate work for the new State/Lake CTA Station. This means Lake Street from Dearborn Street to Wabash Ave will be reduced to one lane on August 18.

Then, a week later on August 25, State Street from Lake Street to Randolph Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

CDOT said this will allow crews to begin utility potholing in preparation for major excavation work. The department said this phase does not include demolition work and commuters will still be able to access businesses. The existing State/Lake elevated CTA station will also remain open during this phase.

The State/Lake CTA station was originally built in 1895. CDOT said it is being reconstructed to "meet modern accessibility standards, improve safety and create a more welcoming rider experience."

Some upgrades include complete ADA compliant elevator access, wide platforms and a range of customer amenities, according to CDOT.

This project is the latest in a series of transit station rehabilitations that are part of the city’s commitment to improving public transportation in Chicago.
