(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — West suburban Congressman Sean Casten says the nation can get beyond the divisions highlighted by the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol but agrees it won’t be easy.

One year after the assault, the Downers Grove Democrat recounted his experiences with WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

Casten remembered being holed up inside a House office building for nine hours and later deep into the night to certify the 2020 election of President Joe Biden.

He said the U.S. has made it through tumultuous times before, such as the Civil War and subsequent presidential assassinations or attempts.

Yes, Casten said, many Republican House members sided with those who attacked the Capitol last year. But he invoked the quote from Lincoln’s secretary of state, William Seward, who said, “There was always just enough virtue in this Republic to save it.”

Ultimately, Casten emphasized, “Democracy won.” But he said it’s important for Americans to deal with what happened and take steps to prevent future illegal takeovers.

“We’ve also got involved in civic associations and be honest about the truth of that day, not allow people who say this was a tourist visit when people were defecating on the floor of the United States House.”
