CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Lake View bar that opened in 1961 has survived a referendum challenge that likely would have led to its shutdown.

Tai’s Til 4, a late-night bar on Ashland near Addison, has been at least a backdrop for neighborhood crime: two shootings at a gas station across Ashland several years ago and last February, a fatal shooting involving two customers outside the bar.

A resident of the neighborhood started a petition drive to close Tai’s down, and the issue was on the ballot this go-round.

The measure failed 63% to 37%.

Among those who supported the bar was 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney. He said other businesses would have been affected if the area was effectively voted dry.
