With Holocaust Remembrance Day approaching, council delays vote on Gaza-related measure

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council on Wednesday put off consideration of a controversial resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, but some heated moments occurred, anyway.

The proposed resolution criticizing Israel for bombing that has harmed Palestinian civilians was delayed because the council was also recognizing the upcoming Holocaust Remembrance Day (Jan. 27). Alders wanted to avoid disrespectful confrontations.

Still, some audience members booed Ald. Debra Silverstein, the council’s only Jewish council member, as the 50th Ward representative talked about the Holocaust.

Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th) chastised the crowd and urged them to show some respect. Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) asked for tolerance and said it was important to remember Holocaust victims who perished.

Eventually, things calmed down.
