CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council paid tribute to the late historian and activist Timuel Black Wednesday and tackled some contentious issues as well.

One of the items on the council's agenda is an ordinance that would after much debate, allow sports betting at or near five major sports venues in Chicago.

During the public comment section of the meeting, Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts urged council members to vote sin favor of the ordinance so Wrigley Field can open its operation.

"This will create hundreds of construction jobs in the short run and we estimate 400 permanent full time jobs when the construction is complete," he said.

And as we've demonstrated with our Wrigley Field development, we are committed to working with minority women and veteran owned contractors as well as having a diverse permanent workforce.

However, the ordinance doesn't require minority participation and that has angered some council members so the debate may not be over just yet.
