(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Authorities are marking a grim anniversary Tuesday. It was 44 years ago that the bodies of two 17-year-old girls were found in a Morton Grove forest preserve.

Eyvonne Bender and Sue Ovington, both students at Niles West High School in Skokie, left around 2:30pm on Sept. 5, 1979 to go to a Dempster Road shopping center anchored by E. J. Korvette and Par-King.

That evening, both girls were discovered shot to death in the Morton Grove Forest Preserves. Their estimated time of death was 3 p.m.

A sibling of one of the victims holds out hope that the case will still be solved, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information that bring a resolution.

“It’s just an empty feeling,” said Bender’s sister, Sharon Peterson. “And I’m the only child now, and just watching my parents go through this has been very hard for me.”

Classmates of the girls would be in their 60’s now. Younger community residents at the time of the murders could be in their 80’s.
