CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - On Vote Early Day, a group of Chicago college students took to the streets before doing their civic duty.
“Having people get their voice out there is just something that really needs to happen,” said Ruby, a student.
A group marched from Harold Washington College to the Loop Supersite.
“I thought it would be good to vote because it’s really important to do,” Ruby added. It’s my first time, and my first time is an election year for the president and that’ the most important one, so might as well be a part of it.”
Before casting her ballot, sophomore Gia told WBBM she’s been reminding all of her friends to vote.
“I am really big on moral and human rights,” Gia said. “ When I’m going to vote today, I’m thinking about all of the people that can’t vote or don’t have access to vote, being able to speak for the people that can’t.”
Joe Hinton, associate dean of Career Programs at Harold Washington, led the way up Lake Street.
“We know that if you develop habits early around voting, those carry with you throughout your entire life,” said Hinton. “We really want to make sure that people remember if they start this, they continue to do it. But, that’s also meant researching, working with students on looking up the candidates on their ballot, being informed about their choices so they vote top to bottom and know who they’re looking at.”
MTV Entertainment is assisting in this year’s efforts, part of their Community College Vote ’24 campaign.
