CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago Police Lieutenant has filed a lawsuit against the former John Marshall Law School, now University of Illinois Chicago Law School, alleging harassment, defamation and retaliation because he’s white.

Lt. John Cannon said it started in 2020 before he graduated.

The then-dean of the law school sent a mass-email describing all white police officers as white supremacists.

"Yeah, it all started with that and it was in the wake of the George Floyd protests, but it doesn't excuse the behavior of the dean," Cannons attorney Dan Herbert told WBBM Newsradio.

Cannon said it continued with similar messages from a visiting professor, who, he alleged, hacked his Facebook page and created a Twitter account, making it appear Cannon is racist.

"I'm a fourth generation police officer, and none of them have been white supremacists. They answered a call to serve the public no matter who that public was, and so did I," Cannon told WBBM Newsradio, adding that his complaints were blown off.

He said if the allegations weren’t true and someone told the story he’d think they’re out of their mind.

But they are true, he added.

UIC Law did not respond to WBBM Newsradio’s request for comment.
