CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police officer critically wounded while trying to break up a bar fight last weekend has been released from the hospital, but has a long road to recovery.

There were cheers and bagpipes playing as Danny Golden, 32, was released from Christ Medical Center Friday afternoon in Oak Lawn. He was to be transferred to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago.

Less than a week ago, Golden was shot outside a bar in West Beverly, paralyzing him from the waist down. Witnesses and investigators said he had tried to stop a fight that started inside the bar.

“When I saw him the other morning I thought he was going to die in front of me,” Golden’s father, Patrick, said. “He was going into shock. Christ Hospital brought him back, they saved him. Hat’s off to Christ Hospital.”

Prosecutors have charged three people in the shooting.
