(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital whose family came from Ukraine has started a drive to send supplies to the people of her homeland.

The turning point for Dr. Sophia Korovaichuk came at a rally in Ukrainian Village.

“I could just feel that there was so much support for the Ukrainian people that I was overwhelmed by that,” she told WBBM Newsradio on Friday. “I knew I had to do something, in that moment.  All of these people were showing up for us.”

She started collecting money — more than $11,000 so far — and has already sent a first shipment of supplies through a trusted organization to Ukraine.

“Tents and sleeping bags and mattress pads for refugees. The second biggest item was non-perishable food. Diapers,” she said.

Dr. Korovaichuk was born in Ukraine and moved with her parents to the U.S. when she was 5.

She said the last several days have been emotionally difficult because she grew up in such a patriotic Ukrainian family.

Korovaichuk says people can check out efforts to help at the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America.
