(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Wisconsin woman has found a creative way to make a donation to someone in Ukraine.
Kaye Kohlmann and her husband booked a night at an Airbnb in Kyiv they have no intention of staying in. The Janesville woman got the idea from a friend on Facebook.
“We just wanted to show our support in some way, some small way,” Kohlmann said Thursday. “Obviously, there isn’t much that we can do from over here, but we know that they’re probably hurting, especially that industry where people aren’t coming and hanging out.”
Kohlmann settled on a two-bedroom apartment offered by a man named Maksym. She said she had a brief exchange with the owner, who thanked her and wrote “we will win.”
In his profile, Maksym says he is a native of the Ukrainian capital and a world-traveler.
“I traveled a lot myself and have visited almost 100 countries of the world, that is why I know how important comfort is in a foreign country or city,” he says.
A spokeswoman tells WBBM Newsradio that Airbnb is temporarily waiving guest and host fees for Ukrainian bookings.
The company is encouraging people to provide housing for refugees by directly hosting them or making donations. Airbnb has a page to help.
