CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Autopsy results have been released concerning two Chicago firefighters who died in two days this week.

Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk’s cause of death was determined to be hypertensive-arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to the Cook County Medical examiner’s office.

The 55-year-old collapsed while climbing the stairs of a Lake Shore Drive high-rise.

“He was an active outdoorsman. He was a motorcyclist. He was a navy veteran. He served in Desert Storm. He liked bicycling,”  Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt  said Wednesday.

The cause of 49-year-old Firefighter Jermaine Pelt’s death, the Medical Examiner’s office said, was “carbon monoxide toxicity from inhalation of smoke and soot.”

“It appears that Firefighter Pelt went down as crews were being ordered out of the building. A mayday was called, and he was quickly found near the hose line and brought for treatment,” Holt said Tuesday.

The fire commissioner had worked with Jermaine Pelt. She knew him personally. His dad said one of his proudest moments was walking his daughter down the aisle.
