CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Chicago man has been charged in a killing spree from five years ago.

Police and Cook County prosecutors said 21-year-old Antonio Reyes shot and killed five people, seemingly at random, at various points across the city over several months back in 2020 when he was just a teenager.

He is also accused in another murder, so that's six in all, and was already in jail on that charge when the five additional charges were filed yesterday.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling praised the police work.

“Not once have these detectives forgotten why they do this job,” Snelling told reporters Wednesday. “They investigated these cases for more than four years in the memory of the victims and the family members of these victims and also our community members who’ve had to suffer through this trauma.

Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke also addressed the media.

“None of these people had ever met Antonio Reyes before, and there is no reason to suspect Antonio Reyes had any reason to target them,” O'Neill Burke said.

One of the victims was killed  in front of his three children.

Investigators said Reyes also tried to kill his cellmate while at Cook County Jail.
