CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot seems to take a dim view of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan's leadership, but she stops short of calling on him to step down.

As a former federal prosecutor, Lightfoot said Thursday she's watching developments in the Commonwealth Edison bribery case closely. Madigan is implicated—though not charged—in the proceedings, and he denies any wrongdoing.

Lightfoot said Democracy requires people to feel leaders have the interests of the people at heart.

"That is the only way our democracy will survive and flourish," the mayor said.

She says her remarks were not just about Madigan, but her words made it clear it includes him.

The mayor said she'll say more about Madigan at another time.

The current speaker, who has controlled the Illinois House for decades, seems to have an uphill fight in being re-elected to that post early next year.
