CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Neighbors who live near Douglass Park told the Chicago Park District that events like the Riot Fest music festival draw thousands of people to the park at the expense of people in the community.

Jesus Martinez, Chief of Staff for state representative Lakeisa Collins said Riot Fest attendees do not treat the festival's neighbors with respect.

“That is because people on the outside looking in have no respect or value for Black communities or the hardworking families here,” Martinez said.

Lollapalooza and the upcoming NASCAR street race have been criticized for tying up public parks for private events.

Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Rosa Escareno said there needs to be more public input about large events.

“We’re not satisfied with how things have rolled out this year,” Escareno said.

The board will vote on an amendment that would require park district board approval for events that draw more than 10,000 people later this fall.
