(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department has requested the public's help in finding two people in connection to Thursday's fatal shooting of retired Chicago police bomb technician Larry Neuman, who was 73 years old.
The shooting happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. on West Monroe Street near South Kildare Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
CPD released surveillance footage that showed two men, dressed in all black, walking down an alley. Officials said they are trying to identify and interview the two individuals. The video may be found here.
West Side Ald. Jason Ervin (18th), whose ward includes West Garfield Park, said following the shooting that he knew Neuman, who was an assistant pastor at Saint Michaels Missionary Baptist church.
"I do know he was a family man, and had been a good person, a pillar in the community [and] lived in West Garfield Park for 40-plus years," Ervin said.
In a statement posted to social media, the Chicago Police Department's bomb squad said Neuman was "a wonderful human being" and became the longest-serving explosives technician with the Chicago Police Bomb Squad.
"Larry was a wealth of knowledge and truly a joy to be around," the statement read. "We pray for his soul and his family during this time."
Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement that the city was "mourning the loss and honoring the memory of retired Chicago police officer Larry Neuman."
"Officer Neuman was a mentor to many, and his courage, hard work and dedication will never be forgotten," Johnson said.
Anyone with information related to the shooting or to the individuals seen in the Chicago police video were encouraged to the Area 4 Detectives Division at 312-746-8252.
