CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A book on the hidden treasures of Chicago encourages people to get out and explore 17 neighborhoods while following clues.

Author Jessica Milinaric said she heard from readers while doing a book signing at City Lit who were doing the Logan Square hunt from her ‘Chicago Scavenger’ book.

"It was just so much fun to hear how people were using the book and enjoying it and getting out into and even just people were saying...slowing down within the neighborhood to stop and look at things they walked past things they knew were there, but really stopping to appreciate them."

That’s just one of 17 neighborhoods the Wicker Park resident explored in her book. She said all the hunts are outdoors so they can be enjoyed in a COVID safe way.

Milinaric explained the spiral bound on the book is so people can use it like a workbook.

The Cleveland native moved to Chicago 13 years ago and said her outsider mentality helps her be more open to learn about the city.

While writing the book last year, Mlinaric says she enjoyed having adventures that got her out of her apartment.

"I was writing this after a year in lockdown and during the summer when I was going out to take photos of every of all places and visiting the neighborhoods, it was just such a nice reason to get back out in the city again after being in my apartment for so long and remembering all the different neighborhoods."

Chicago is ever-changing, so she said she chose to highlight long-standing restaurants and stores in the hopes that they are still around for years to come.
