Chicago school board signals shift from charter, magnet schools

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of an association of charter schools is expressing some skepticism about plans for the Chicago Public Schools to move away from so-called school choice.

The Chicago Board of Education this week approved a resolution to strengthen neighborhood schools over five years by moving away from magnet schools and charter schools.

But Andrew Broy, president of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, said privately run charter schools have been helping lift up South and West side communities.

He said the board’s five-year plan was launched without input from the charter school system or parents. He hopes that will change.
