CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago teachers are heading to Springfield to ask the state legislature for an additional $1 billion in state funding.

CTU President Stacy Davis Gates argues the federal government covered what the union estimates is a $1.1 billion shortfall, but, now that it has stopped the pandemic aid, progress such as large improvements in student reading scores are at risk.

Teachers may get a frosty reception from some lawmakers, including Republican leaders like Rep. Sue Rezin who called the school day trip “tone death” and said 340 other schools have a greater need for state funds.
