CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, Pedro Martinez, promised that the in-school COVID-19 testing program would be up and running weeks ago. The Chicago Teachers Union said he has not delivered.
Parents and teachers set up their own testing site outside Murphy Elementary on the 35-hundred block of West Grace Street to make a point.
CTU President Jesse Sharkey noted promises were made about testing going back to July.
"And we were told that 100% of students that want to be tested would be tested. Right now we've only had 10% of our students even sign up. And other students who've signed up for testing, less than half are actually able to get that testing on a weekly basis. We have testing teams that show up at our buildings for an hour and a half. We have teachers that want to be tested who've signed up for it who haven't been tested in over a month. It's supposed to be happening every week. It's not acceptable on testing. CPS needs to do better," Sharkey said.
Sharkey also said the administration gets a failing grade on vaccinations.
And he mentioned public health officials’ prediction of a potential winter surge in COVID-19 cases as more people gather inside.
