(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -The Chicago area will likely see its first measurable accumulation of snow this season.

Flurries and snow showers are expected to start early Tuesday morning and continue into the evening.

“From that, we could see a coating to an inch or two with the best chance for the higher amounts as you go north and west of the city," said AccuWeather meteorologist Dean DeVore.

Tuesday is the main snow event, but scattered snow showers could bring an additional dusting throughout the rest of this week.

While Chicago is no stranger to snow this time of year, DeVore said  this week's forecast feels a little more surprising given how warm it was at the beginning of November.

“The first 10 or 11 days, we were 15 to 20 degrees above normal several of those days,” added DeVore. “So this big winter flip over the weekend and the snowy week ahead is tough to take in, but it’s not something that’s going away.”

This week’s snowfall will also be met with frigid temperatures.

Highs are expected to only reach the mid-20s by Friday. Lows heading into next weekend will be in the teens.
