(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The city has a fireworks extravaganza planned for people who stay up on New Year’s Eve.
Chicago last rang in the New Year on the Riverwalk in 2022. After a one-year break, the city is sponsoring a five-minute barrage of fireworks from six bridges along the Chicago River, at midnight. The show is coordinated with Navy Pier’s fireworks.
The fireworks will be preceded by a retrospective of “Art on the Mart” – in which images are projected onto the Merchandise Mart – beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
“You’ll be able to come and look at the best of Art at the Mart for the last five years,” said Ann Hickey, with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “There were actually be a huge time clock on the Merchandise Mart that will count down to midnight and then the fireworks.”
Bridge closures will take effect at 11:45 p.m., but the Wabash and Michigan avenue bridges will remain open.
City officials say the best viewing perspective will be along Upper Wacker Driver between McClurg Court on the east and Frankin Street on the west.
