(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Vendors at the Little Village Discount Mall who face eviction later this month have taken their protest to the developer they say is displacing them.

The vendors on Thursday assembled in the parking lot of the mall on 26th and drove about 8 miles north to the offices of Novak Construction.

“Our culture makes us unique, and our desire for progress makes us just like you, Mr. Novak,” vendor representative Kocoy Malago said through an interpreter. “It is not only attacking a community, it’s attacking a culture.

“We see day by day how minorities are trampled on by the lack of empathy. We are open to change, we are open to dialogue for the best agreement for both parties, but we are not willing to be trampled on.”

Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th) said vendors like the ones at the discount mall keep communities vibrant.

The development firm agreed to a meeting.
