CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Workers at Intelligentsia, much like those at some Starbucks and Colectivo coffee shops, have voted to unionize their workplace.

Intelligentsia workers at all five Chicago locations will be represented by Local 1220 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) said the vote was 9-to-1 in favor of the union.

That means about two-thirds of the workers did not vote.

In its press release, union officials wrote that the bargaining unit of cafe workers will comprise roughly 30 members.

IBEW said its original petition to the NLRB included additional employees at Intelligenstia’s Chicago Roasting Works warehouse, but that move was challenged by the company.

Local 1220 Business Manager John Rizzo said, in a statement, the union is “thrilled” to have them.

He said, “A collective bargaining agreement is one of the strongest tools that workers have.”
