(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A movie nominated for Best Picture -- and its fictionalized title character who has a connection to Chicago -- are being personified on social media by a real-life Chicago comedian.
Lydia Tár, orchestra conductor extraordinaire and formerly conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is a complete fiction. Never in Chicago. Not a real person. An imperious character in an Oscar-nominated movie called Tár that stars Cate Blanchett and is written and directed by Todd Field.
“You know, I’ve been around tons of people like her,” says comedian Daniella Mazzio.
She saw the movie in the fall and loved it and says she decided to set up a Twitter account for the fictional character.
“I was like, well, if she’s going to build a following, this character in the movie is arguably not a very good person. But I want to still bring good things into this world while kind of doing this bit,” Mazzio explains.
The fictional Tár has several thousand more Twitter followers than the real Mazzio, which is fine with her.
In addition to the Twitter account, she created lydiatar.com. It redirects people to some of Mazzio’s favorite causes and charities.
“I was like, oh, maybe I can take advantage of some of the popularity she’s getting, especially if a tweet really balloons on one day or a lot of people are looking at this, to kind of encourage them as well to support a lot of causes,” Mazzio says.
For instance, if you try to pre-order the autobiography “Tár on Tár” -- which is not a thing, by the way -- you’re directed to the National Network of Abortion Funds.
