CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This week’s Difference Maker highlights the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which is making a difference each and every day.

“We are Chicago’s food bank,” said Spokesperson Man-Yee Lee.

Lee said the food depository partners with over 800 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters across Chicago and Cook County.

“We provide and supply free food to all of those partners so that they can get out into the communities and to families who are in need and facing food insecurity,” Lee said.

But they’re stepping up their difference making efforts this July, which is National Make a Difference to Children Month, by partnering with seven different restaurants, who will donate a portion of their proceeds to the depository.

“Adobo Grill is giving 20% of their guacamole sales to us,” Lee said. “Amerikas in Oak Park, a percentage of their Amerikas Burger sales are going to be coming to us. And Cesar’s downtown, they’re donating all of their kids menu proceeds, any item on the kids menu sold in July will go towards helping to alleviate food insecurity.”

Lee said one in five households with children in the Chicago area are currently dealing with food insecurity, which means the city is back to early pandemic numbers.

“We believe that food is a basic human right and that everyone deserves to eat,” Lee said. “We can’t end hunger alone, so we appreciate all of our supporters. We couldn’t make the difference without them.”

You can find the full list of participating restaurants, as well as ways to donate online at chicagosfoodbank.org.
