Chicago’s voter turnout sits at 63%, as count continues with mail-in ballots

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — About 63% of eligible Chicago voters have cast a ballot so far in the 2024 general election, according to data shared by the Chicago Board of Elections.

Officials said 948,643 ballots were processed on Election Day. That number included early voting ballots and processed vote-by-mail ballots. There are just under 1.5 million active registered voters in Chicago.

The data showed women outvoted men by more than 100,000 ballots. The former cast 526,232 ballots, while the latter have cast 419,623 ballots.

Millennials accounted for the largest age demographic of voters, with Chicagoans between the age of 25 – 34 accounting for 206,704 votes and those between the age of 35 – 44 accounting for 169,946 votes.

The next highest age group was the 55 – 64 demographic, which cast 145,234 ballots.

On Election Day, the busiest time to vote was between 8 – 9 a.m., during which 36,688 ballots were cast. Chicago polling places stayed similarly busy into the afternoon.

Since 1992, Chicago’s turnout has exceeded 70% in each presidential election, save one. In 1996, the city’s turnout was 63.17%.
