(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago alderwoman wants the city to track the type of “hate incident” that she considers to be a precursor to hate crimes.
50th Ward Ald. Debra Silverstein says her measure would allow residents to report to 3-1-1 incidents that are not crimes but are hateful, abusive or harassment.
Speaking with the Chicago Sun-Times, she cited as examples incidents in which people give a Nazi salute or burn LGBTQ flags.
“There are definitely incidents that are happening, and we need to make sure that we’re tracking them,” Silverstein said.
Police officers would be required to write reports for such incidents, and the department would maintain an online dashboard that is updated at least every month.
The Commission on Human Relations would use that data to write an annual report.
