CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump is representing an 18-year-old college student, who was injured in a multiple-vehicle crash last week in downstate Teutopolis involving a tanker truck that leaked ammonia.

The student, 18-year-old Anja Dangelmaier, is a student at the University of Missouri.

She was with three other freshmen members of the swim team on their way to Ohio State University for a meet. They were caught in the aftermath of the crash and leak that left five people dead.

They were unable to escape the toxic cloud of ammonia. All four are in a hospital ICU with chemical burns.

“Anja is in the ICU with severe chemical burns to her lungs, eyes, and most of her body," Crump said in a statement.

“We are demanding an investigation into the accident that caused this catastrophic crash, and accountability from the driver and the trucking company for their negligence.”

State Police are conducting an investigation and have identified the driver of a car that left the scene and may have caused the truck driver to swerve and roll over.

Crump is known for representing families in civil rights cases-most notably the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Trayvon Martin.
