(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A local businessman and political consultant is trying to drum up support for new laws that would require bullets to have serial numbers, making them easier for police to trace.

In addition to helping run political campaigns, Matthew Harrington is CEO of Ammo Coding Systems, a company that proposes serialization of ammunition.

He said manufacturers would use equipment similar to machines that etch diamonds. Police who recover bullets from a crime scene could consult a database to find out who purchased them, when, and from where.

Not surprisingly, ammo manufacturers are not enthusiastic about changing their manufacturing processes. Harrington is trying to get federal and local governments to require serialization.

There’s legislation being considered in Illinois and other states.

Harrington says he’s even asked Rev. Jesse Jackson to send a letter to the White House on his behalf.
