CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A construction crane collapsed near CTA tracks in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side, forcing the partial evacuation of a nearby apartment building, but causing no injuries.
The crane, used in the Red Line reconstruction project, tipped over around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near Bryn Mawr and Winthrop, a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said.
Power was knocked out to businesses and homes in the area, and fire officials said they cleared out part of a neighboring building.
It was not clear what caused the crane to fall over. Chicago Fire District Chief John Gies said the crane became unbalanced and collapsed.
"This crane was up there...for drilling holes. It toppled over and just fell off the walls, basically what is looks like," he said.
Occupants of the evacuated building won’t be able to return until the crane is cleared, Chicago Fire officials said.
Red and Purple Line train service was suspended between the Belmont and Howard stations at about 3:30 p.m., the CTA said in an alert. Normal train service resumed by 9 p.m., the CTA said.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) is investigating.
