CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With a strike date looming for faculty at UIC, the two sides have been back at the bargaining table Thursday.
The contract talks resumed after a decision by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board that the administration violated contractual obligations by failing to bargain with the union about changes made to faculty working conditions during the pandemic.
“Management has run out of time,” said Aaron Krall, co-Chair of UIC's faculty union bargaining committee in a statement. “Delaying tactics won’t prevent a strike. Faculty concerns need to be addressed now.”
A statement from Chief Steward Robert Johnston said:
“The past 8 months are further evidence that management engages in bad faith bargaining as a matter of course.”
Compensation is among the outstanding issues. Provision of student mental health resources and psychological/neuropsychological testing, non-tenure track job security, and protocols for handling student complaints and faculty discipline are also on the table.
“The university’s intent is to resolve these negotiations without any disruption," the administration stated in the past.
The strike date is January 17.
