(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Cook County Assessor’s Office is rolling out a property tax tool that creators say could be a gamechanger for plenty of people.

“This is really the first time that all of this data has been gathered in one place outside of the Cook County mainframe,” said Dan Snow, director of data science with the Assessor’s Office.

They are  introducing its new Property Tax Simulator software, or PTAXSIM.

“You can use it to answer questions like ‘what would my property tax bill be if my assessment didn’t increase?’” he said. “Or, ‘what would my bill be if the city didn’t increase the amount of money that it does each year?’”

Snow said PTAXSIM will give plenty of power and insight to businesses and policy makers moving forward.

“They will have much more clarity on which levers to pull to decrease taxes, if that’s their aim, or what their changes to the system would do to people’s bills,” Snow said.

The office will show off the software at what’s called Chi Hack Night this week.

“It is a great venue for talking about this stuff,” Snow said. “The audience is super receptive and helpful.”
