COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County leaders say they are reflecting on the past and looking to the future during their observance of Black History Month.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the theme of the celebration this year is preserving the past, shaping the future, heritage and legacy.
"This theme encapsulates the essence of preserving our rich African American heritage and history while simultaneously looking ahead to the future."
County Commissioner Bill Lowry also spoke about the importance of honoring black history. "It's important that we take time to recognize and appreciate the countless contributions that black people have made to our county, to our city, to our state, to our country."
He said the focus on past struggles and accomplishments is important, as the county looks for ways to address current challenges.
"As we fight for economic equity, as we fight for the provision of health care, including mental health care as we provide educational opportunities, including apprenticeship opportunities for those in the community and as we continue our criminal justice reform efforts, while combating violence the violence which permeates throughout our streets."
Lowry added that Black History Month shows what the community has achieved, and that even the most difficult challenges can be overcome.
