COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Property taxes are rising sharply for homeowners in Cook County, especially in the Northwest Suburbs.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said an analysis of 2023 tax bills by her office shows that while more than 250,000 residents saw their bills go down, nearly 1.3 million saw higher property tax bills.
“There’s a whole lot of sticker shock here, county wide. The property taxes are up $909 million,” Pappas revealed.
The weight is falling more on residential property.
Pappas said the northwest suburbs, which were just reassessed, are seeing the biggest increases. Residents saw the median residential tax bill rise by almost 16%.
Part of the problem, she said, is the County has so many units of government and most raised taxes.
“Schools are first, up 6%. Municipalities are up 3%. The County is up 6%. Park districts are up 5%. Community colleges are up 5%. Libraries are up 3%. Fire protections [are] up 6%,” said Pappas.
On top of that, property values are increasing, and that means higher taxes too.
“You’ve got an increase in the value of all these homes in the northwest suburbs. Now, you’ve got an increase in the cost of schools in the suburbs. So, you’ve got an increase in the taxes,” said Pappas.
