(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Cook County sheriff’s officer has been charged in a hit-and-run incident that took place earlier this month and left a woman seriously injured in the Greektown neighborhood.

The woman was jogging on the side of Halsted Street on the evening of Aug. 3 when she was hit from behind by a Toyota RAV-4 near Madison Street, police said.

She was thrown into the air and was run over. The driver took off, but two witnesses followed. They managed to get pictures of the SUV, the plate and the driver.

A license plate camera later detected the SUV in Burbank.

The driver was arrested and identified as 51-year-old David Salmon. Police said he was off-duty at the time of the incident.

He was charged with failure to report an accident involving injury and leaving the scene. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said he’s been placed on administrative duty and relieved of police powers.

He could be fired.
