HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With the one-year mark of the Highland Park 4th of July parade shooting drawing near, there's an emotional update from the mother of a young boy seriously wounded in the incident.
"Through all of it, Cooper is still Cooper," said Keely Roberts.
She was among the many to be shot and wounded at the parade. Her son, 9- year-old Cooper, suffered injuries that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
"We've made a real commitment to reflecting on the blessings that have come from this," Roberts said in a new video update. "I think that's a really important, conscious, decision that we've made. To not get pulled into the darkness of this."
And while Roberts said that the family's entire routine has changed in the last year, she praises Cooper for his strong spirit, commitment to keep playing sports and positive attitude since the shooting that changed his life.
"He's funny and he's happy and everyone who knows him is inspired by him because he is the happiest little boy that I know."
