(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County officials brought gifts Sunday as they sought to increase the vaccination rate in south suburban Dixmoor.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle called the toy giveaway and pop-up clinic a hyperlocal strategy.

“The higher the vaccination rates, the fewer the mutations, the more likely it is we can move forward as communities and ad our country," she said.

The state public health department says residents in Dixmoor’s zip codes are only 52% and 39% fully vaccinated, well below Cook County’s 66%.

Among those receiving vaccine doses was Dixmoor Trustee Toni Mitchell, who got her first shot. She said she plans to share her experience with reluctant relatives and friends in the hope of persuading them to get vaccinated as well.

Dr. Mehbub Kapadia, medical director of Prism Medical Lab, said  his group brought about 200 doses of the vaccine to the event.
