CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Around 300 couples celebrated 50 years of marriage on Sunday by renewing their vows at Holy Name Cathedral.

Cardinal Blasé Cupich presided over the Golden Anniversary Mass and compared the couples' 50 years of marriage to the feat of baseball's iron man Cal Ripken Jr.

Calculating 50 years of marriage, Cardinal Cupich figured the couples had been together for more than 18,000 days.

"You are the people who since the day that you promised to be true to each other, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health , showed up, each and every day and that is worth celebrating," Cupich said.

The couples, some with walkers and wheelchairs in tow, joined hands and faced each other. Husbands went first renewing their vows followed by their wives.
