CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago’s COVID-19 cases are on the rise but a new mask requirement is not expected to be imposed, at least not yet.

The city’s Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Alison Arwady, said cases are up 27% from a week ago. Nearly 1,200 new cases are being diagnosed daily, but, she said, things, at the moment, are looking pretty good.

“At the medium level, masks are strongly recommended indoors and if Cook County does move to a high level, which I definitely think could happen, potentially even in the next few weeks…we would only do a mask requirement if our hospital numbers here in Chicago were getting threatened,” said Arwady.

Hospitalizations remain very low. One or two people are dying each day, compared to 50 or 60 during the height of the pandemic. That’s because of vaccines, Arwady said.
